If you reside in one of the states that awards state aid on an FCFS basis until funds run out (refer back to the Intro for a list), then you also want to file the FAFSA and other required forms ASAP after October 1st. More on State Aid in Step 5.

If neither of the first two situations apply to you, the earliest school’s priority deadline becomes your overall final deadline, and you should file the form at the point between October 1st and this date during a time when your family contribution is likely to be the lowest number.
